MASA Celebrates A Year of Expansion and Exciting New Programs!
JUNE 2024
We're Making a Video Game! VOTOS LOCOS will promote voter participation among first time and disenfranchised voters!
Hello, Friends!
This has been an exciting year for Media Arts Santa Ana! Founding director Victor Payan was awarded both the California Creative Corps Fellowship and the California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship! With funding from these programs, as well as Creative Capital and the City of Santa Ana, we teamed with developers from our friends at the OC Indies Video Game Developers who meet at our space every month to create the VOTOS LOCOS video game, which will lead players through four fun voting adventures battling internet trolls, Russian bots, cyber ninjas and more!
VOTOS LOCOS will launch at EL BARCO Mexican Restaurant in Santa Ana on Saturday, July 20 at 6pm.
This takes our work to the next level of community impact, as the game will be used as a tool to reach youth and other populations in advance of this year's elections! The game will also be translated into English, Spanish and Vietnamese!
Please take a moment to donate to support our work, the creation of this exciting and fun new video game, and our commitment to provide free programs and free use of our digital maker space to the community!

DECEMBER 2023
Happy New Year from MASA! Looking ahead to 2024!
Hello, Friends!
2023 was an incredible year of expansion and new programming for MASA. In addition to celebrating the anniversary of our TVGB Digital Maker Space in June, we opened the MASARTE Gallery in November with the Mexican Consulate's nationally-touring Corazón Migrante exhibit which featured work by 23 Mexican artists living throughout the United States.
The year saw a full schedule of great free programming, including our weekly Cafe MASA, the Grassroots Garage Band class, Augmented Reality art workshops, a Latino Urbanism workshop with James Rojas, artist professional development sessions and free grant writing classes which resulted in several artists garnering funding at the local and state level.
The year's programming included our 14th OC Film Fiesta cinematic celebration of the nation's diversity and multicultural heritage and our sixth year as presenting partner for Arts Orange County's OC Día del Niño Festival. We also worked with Artist-in-Residence Pocha Peña create SANARTE, Santa Ana's first geotagged augmented reality history walk.
MASA hosted meetings and events with local video game developer, screenwriter, songwriter, stand up comedy, Latinx parenting and community groups.
Click Here to see a highlights video of recent MASA programs and events.
I was also invited to be a presenter at the OC Grantmakers Summit and appointed to serve on the John Wayne Airport Arts Commission.
The coming year is poised to be another year of expansion, new partnerships and more of our exciting brand of innovative and impactful community-based programs.
We have some great plans in store for 2024, which include:
- The 15th OC Film Fiesta International Multicultural Film Festival
- We AR Santa Ana , the first citywide Augmented Reality Art Festival
- A new Curator Incubator Program to train local emerging artists to be curators.
- Exciting Exhibits at our new MASARTE Gallery, Including Pepe Serna: Life is Art, The Art of Suavecito and Dreamocracy in America.
Please consider including MASA in your philanthropic giving to help us continue delivering high quality free classes, screenings and special events for youth, adults and community groups. CLICK HERE to donate

2020 HIGHLIGHTS
Dear Friends,
I hope you are safe and well, and ready to leave 2020 behind for a brighter year! 2020 was a year of expansion for MASA, and we adapted to virtual programs in response to the pandemic. The 11th OC FILM FIESTA went virtual, and we reached audiences around the country.
Additionally, we also delivered our MILLENNIAL PRODUCERS ACADEMY (MILPA) program virtually to great success and partnered with Arts OC on the VIRTUAL VOICES VETERANS STORYTELLING PROJECT.

PLANS FOR 2021
We want to thank everyone who helped make this possible, and have some great plans in store for 2021, which we’d like to share with you.
Our 12th OC FILM FIESTA will build on the success of last year's virtual event to bring the festival to a larger national audience and to showcase more local filmmakers from Orange County's diverse multicultural communities.
In order to address the need of families seeking quality educational activities during the quarantine, we will be producing a series of online instructional videos in the coming year for both our TEEN CINEMA CAMP and MILLENNIAL PRODUCERS ACADEMY (MILPA)! These videos will be made available free to the public, and will be coupled with live virtual classes.
The 2021 OC DÍA DEL NIÑO FESTIVAL will also be virtual, and will be taking place in April! Visit www.ocdiadelnino.org later this month for more information.
As we expand MASA’s free and accessible programming to reach more people and to fulfill a critical need to help our community to bridge the digital divide in the coming year, we would like to ask for your help to join us in providing the OC community with quality programming, screenings and youth media arts classes.
If you are able to support our work and would like to make a secure, tax deductible contribution towards our 2021 programs, please visit: https://masamedia.networkforgood.com
Mil Gracias and ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

2019 HIGHLIGHTS
Dear Friends,
This past year was a great one for Media Arts Santa Ana, and we want to share our success with you!
Our signature OC Film Fiesta celebrated its 10th Anniversary and expanded to four cities. This acclaimed cinematic celebration of Orange County’s diversity and multicultural heritage featured more than 40 films in six venues, and included a spotlight on the Middle East. The festival was profiled as a cover story for the OC Film Fiesta.

In March, to honor legendary sci fi author and former Santa Ana resident Philip K. Dick, we partnered with the New York’s Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival, to bring their event to Southern California for the first time. The festival featured screenings in New York, Santa Ana and Los Angeles, and we created a PKD multicultural dystopian short film challenge, which drew entries from around the world.
Additionally, MASA’s second year as a partner in Arts OC’s OC Dia del Niño Festival at the OC Fair & Event Center saw the free family festival expand to two days. The festival was enjoyed by more than 9,000 people, and featured 21 performers and 20 free family arts workshops. Here are some photos from this wonderful event.

We also helped connect the OC Fair & Event Center with acclaimed artist TIMOI to create a series of murals promoting storm drain awareness, as part of our Murals and Media Program.
We also received the Local Impact and Organizational Development grants form the California Arts Council as well as the Investing in the Artist Grant from the City of Santa Ana.
We are asking you to join in our success by making a tax-deductible contribution to support these wonderful programs as well as our Teen Cinema Camp and Millennial Producers’ Academy, which will take place in the spring.
In 2020, we are also planning an exciting calendar of year-round programming, including workshops, screenings and discussions, special events, etc.
Finally, we are excited to announce that a donor has offered to match contributions to Media Arts Santa Ana's Winter Fundraiser up to $250 by January 31! Your contribution of any amount will be doubled to help us reach the goal of turning $250 into $500 to support:
- Free Youth Media Classes, such as the Teen Cinema Camp & the Mural and Media Class
- 11th OC Film Fiesta multicultural film festival
- The Millennial Producers Academy (MILPA)
- The Taco Truck Cinema series
- MASA Cine Club
- Instructors and Professional Workshop Presenters
